The Bellows Falls Varsity Baseball team is off to a 2-3 start to the season. Although that might not seem like the best record to start a season, all three losses were to D1 schools. Those three teams were Brattleboro, Mount Anthony and Hartford. This has not discouraged the head coach, Bob Lockerby, who said in an interview that, “ This year’s team is capable of better things that they have shown so far.” One particular game that this year’s baseball team has shown that they are capable of was against the D3 team Leland and Grey which they won by a score of 16-1 in 5 innings.

Coach Lockerby has been coaching baseball for 39 years at all different levels from Little League when he was a Sophomore in college to Legion baseball and of course Varsity Baseball. Some important lessons that he pushes to all of his players is to, “ Play every game like it is your last” and “You never know who is watching”. These two lessons are important because baseball is a mentally tough sport and if one does not go on the field everyday with this mentality baseball will eat them up. In addition, when coach Lockerby was asked, “What is important to you when organizing a sports team?”, he responded with, “Commitment”. Commitment is key to a great baseball team because if the team members are not committed to their team and to making themselves better they will not be successful. Throughout the interview Coach Lockerby stressed that a season is not deemed successful by the amount of wins and losses, it is about progression. Seeing kids improve throughout the season, working hard to be better than they were when they started.

It is clear that the team is in great hands and has the ability to have a successful season but now it is time to go out there and take care of things on the field. Good luck to all of the baseball players, Coach Lockerby and the two assistant coaches Coach Don and Coach Forbush as they continue their season!
