AP European History students spent a day in Boston recently, visiting numerous sites connected to our study of European history.

They started at the Museum of Fine Arts where they had a tour of the European collection, with the students getting the opportunity to examine and analyze the works of Donatello, El Greco, Monet, and Van Gogh up close. There was a special exhibit of Boticelli’s work, too, so that made the visit to the museum even more memorable.  They learned about a lot of artistic time periods throughout our course by examining how art portrayed the events and changes of the time period. It was an incredible opportunity to see these world class works of art up close and in person.

Then they visited the Vilna Shul, a synagogue that dates back to the early 1900s that was built by Lithuanian Jewish immigrants.  A large part of our course was tracing the evolution of how Jews were treated throughout Europe. The class were interested in visiting a synagogue built by those who fled the oppression and violence of the late 1800s in Europe.

The group then visited three memorials around Boston: the Boston Irish Famine Memorial, the New England Holocaust Memorial, and the Hungarian Revolution Monument.  They had learned about all of these events in class, so it was great for the students to see them memorialized in Boston.

They finished our trip with a German dinner at the Jacob Wirth restaurant, where the students tried a number of German dishes, including weinerschnitzel and spaetzel.
