With the lack of numbers, Bellows Falls was not able to have a wrestling team this year.  But, those that signed up and actually had the desire to wrestle were able to do so as independents through the Rockingham Area Wrestling (RAW) club coached by Todd Swisher. The numbers began with 6 wrestlers but dwindled down to only 2 wrestlers, DJ Snide and Lucas Saunders.

As the 2016-17 wrestling season came to an end on Saturday, February 25th, DJ Snide finished his senior season at the 195 pound weight class as the 2016 Hubie Wagner Tournament Champion, Jason Lowell Memorial Tournament Champion, 2017 Commodore Invitational Runner-Up, a 3rd place finish at the 44th David Minickiello Holiday Invitational, a 5th place finish at the Vermont State Tournament, a 23-5 season record and his high school career with a 99-49 career record.  Lucas Saunders finished his junior season in the 106 pound weight class as the 2016 Hubie Wagner Tournament Champion, Jason Lowell Memorial Tournament Champion, 2017 Commodore Invitational Runner-Up, a 2nd place finish at the 44th David Minickiello Holiday Invitational, a 3rd place finish at the Vermont State Tournament qualifying him for the 2017 New England Championship (for the third consecutive year), a 16-4 season record, and a 61-27 career record up to his junior year.

Coach Todd Swisher had his own wrap up comments for the season and DJ’s career. “I’ve enjoyed coaching Lucas and DJ over the past three seasons. Their commitment and discipline has allowed them to be very successful, not only in wrestling, but with other facets of life as well.” Coach Swisher said he will miss DJ, but would not be surprised if DJ lends his leadership skills in a coaching capacity in his future. Swisher added, “Though it was disappointing to have the wrestling team dropped as a varsity sport, it was inspiring to have members of the Bellows Falls wrestling community step up and make sure these boys were afforded the opportunity to continue to compete. There is a lot of work left to be done, but because of the Rockingham Area Wrestling Club, students from Bellows Falls and surrounding towns will be able to continue wrestling.”
